Introduction
Nylon (polyamide, most commonly PA6 or PA12 in FDM printing) is the material to reach for when a part needs to survive thousands of load cycles, resist abrasion, or flex repeatedly without cracking — the kind of duty cycle that would fatigue PLA, PETG, or even ABS. It's the closest thing on this list to a true engineering thermoplastic, used in gears, living hinges, tool handles, and load-bearing brackets in production far beyond 3D printing.
That performance comes with real process demands. Nylon is intensely hygroscopic — it pulls moisture from the air fast enough that a spool left unsealed for even a few hours can print noticeably worse, with popping, poor layer bonding, and rough surface finish as the absorbed moisture flashes to steam at the nozzle. It also shrinks more than PETG or PLA as it cools, and it doesn't bond well to a bare glass or PEI bed without a specific adhesion aid. None of this makes nylon hard to print so much as it makes nylon unforgiving of shortcuts — dry filament and a stable, warm bed aren't optional the way they might be for PLA.
In practice, this makes nylon the right choice at IMECA3D whenever a part needs genuine mechanical durability over time — gears, hinges, snap-fits that get used repeatedly, or brackets under continuous vibration — and the wrong choice whenever a faster or more forgiving material would do the job just as well.

Nylon's shrinkage and moisture sensitivity make it the least dimensionally predictable material on this page straight off the printer — but it's also the most forgiving once assembled, since its ductility lets a slightly tight fit "break in" through use rather than crack outright the way PLA would. Expect to iterate on clearance more than with other materials, especially across different humidity conditions in your workshop.

Living hinges are a special case worth calling out: nylon is one of the few FDM materials that can survive a thin, repeatedly-flexed hinge section without fatigue cracking, provided the hinge is printed with continuous perimeters running along the flex axis rather than across it.

Nylon's heat performance depends heavily on which grade you're using — PA12 tends to have better dimensional stability and lower moisture uptake, while PA6 generally offers higher strength and heat resistance at the cost of being even more moisture-sensitive. For most functional prototyping we spec a PA12-based or nylon-composite blend for its better print behavior; for parts where higher heat resistance matters more than ease of printing, a PA6 formulation may be worth the added process discipline.

Drying isn't a one-time step — nylon reabsorbs moisture from ambient air within hours of leaving a sealed container, so the practical workflow is dry-then-print, not dry-once. If a print shows popping sounds, rough or fuzzy surface texture, or weak layer adhesion, moisture is the first thing to check before adjusting anything else.
Wall thickness: 3+ perimeters for load-bearing parts, though nylon's toughness means thinner walls fail more gracefully here than they would in PLA — useful for parts where some flex is acceptable or even desired.
Infill: 25–40% for gears, brackets, and other parts under repeated mechanical load. For living hinges and other flex features, keep the flexing section as solid perimeters rather than infill, since infill patterns don't hold up well under repeated bending.
Layer orientation: Orient gear teeth, snap-fit tabs, and other small load-bearing features so the load path runs in-plane rather than across layers — nylon's inter-layer bond is good, but its in-plane strength and fatigue resistance are still meaningfully better.
Fastener features: Nylon is one of the few FDM materials well suited to printing its own threads directly (rather than relying on heat-set inserts), thanks to its wear resistance — though heat-set inserts are still the more durable option for parts that will be assembled and disassembled repeatedly.
Bed adhesion and warping: Because nylon shrinks unevenly on cooling, large flat parts benefit from the same design habits as ABS — avoid unbroken flat areas near the bed where possible, add a brim, and expect an enclosure to meaningfully improve results on anything larger than a small bracket.
Where Nylon Fits in a Project
Nylon earns its place wherever a part needs to survive real mechanical duty over time rather than a single load event. Typical uses at IMECA3D include gears, cams, and other wear components, living hinges and repeatedly flexed features, tool handles and grips, brackets and mounts under continuous vibration or cyclic load, and functional end-use parts where fatigue life matters more than print speed or cost.
When to move to a different material: if the part is a visual or fit-check prototype, PLA is faster, cheaper, and far more forgiving to print. If it needs good toughness and moisture resistance without nylon's drying requirements, PETG is the easier choice. If it needs heat resistance and solvent-based post-processing more than fatigue life, ABS is more practical. Nylon is the material that asks the most of the printing process and gives the most back in return — genuine fatigue resistance, wear resistance, and toughness that none of the other common FDM filaments can match. Get the drying and bed adhesion right, and nylon parts will outlast almost anything else on this page under real mechanical duty. Skip the drying step, and it's the one material here where a shortcut shows up immediately in the print.
